Rating – 52: Overall a pretty bad movie, it seems like it was made for ‚Booktok‘; Amy Adams can only make fun of how silly the story is despite its strong messages about the struggles of motherhood
Direction – Pretty Bad: The direction on the macro scale is very simple and feels good, it seems like this movie was made specifically for "Booktok" ; the direction on the micro scale is very soft, forced and simple; The storytelling is incredibly simple and bland because it reads like a mother is reading this story back to meStory – Bad: The concept is actually really bad and it’s obvious that this movie was made for ‚Booktok‘ because the book is a ‚Booktok‘ book; not only is the concept stupid, but it’s also poorly introduced and shown to be important, since it seems like just a minor detail in the entire movie; the plot structure very simple and straightforward; the character writing is very good, although very open-ended, because the main character is a symbol of the struggle of motherhood, and that you can’t be a perfect mother Screenplay – Pretty Bad: The dialogue is simple, bland, and written as if it were about motherhood.
"Booktok" ; the dialogue is so bad that in the first 20 minutes of the film there is literally a scene where the main character says, „I am a night owl“; ; the humor is good, but very forced; the symbolism is deep, since the entire film is about the struggle of motherhood and accepting that nothing is a model mother or a model person; the foreshadowing only exists because the film is very formulaic
Actor – Pretty Good: Amy Adams – Good (her performance is only good because she’s Amy Adams; there’s nothing to work with), Scoot McNairy – Pretty Good (She has pretty good chemistry with Adams and does a great job of introducing her – and a one-sided dynamic), The Rest of the Cast – Fair (Lots of supporting actors who are good, mostly just supporting Adams) Cinematography – Fair: Simple Editing – Fair: Simple Visual Effects – The Bad: Quite sticky paced – the pacing is a bit slow as the narration moves the story forward Climax – the climax is quite forced Tone – The tone is very much like this movie was made for the “Booktok”.
